The Shepherd’s Dog study

This one is a gouache study of Sam Beam’s album art for The Shepherd’s Dog, one of the greatest album arts Of All Time. Naturally I turned it into Pica since he is ostensibly a Shepherd’s Dog (and this is probably going to happen a lot with my studies, so I hope you like looking at Pica). If I ever get access to a decent scanner I’ll reupload a better picture 😩

I’ve done two or three gouache pieces in the past, and after deciding to give it a more serious try, I did some research and learned the brand I’d been using wasn’t very good. I picked up another set (Holbein) and did this as a tryout piece. I kept the original’s limited palette (it looks to have been painted with only the primary colors and black and white, so I did the same) and tried to emulate some of the roughness it has while also experimenting with the color block style I see a lot of gouache paintings using.
